Workshops and Masterclasses

In addition to the weekly workshops and classes, CGWM also organises a variety of workshops and masterclasses during the year. These events provide musicians with valuable opportunities to further develop their skills and are often led by visiting guest artists who are performing in the North Wales area.

Workshop topics vary from classical music to folk music and composition. Recent highlights include:

String workshop with Simon Chalk which gave soloists and ensembles the opportunity to receive tuition from the violinists who has travelled the world as the leader of various ensembles and orchestras and more recently, as an orchestral conductor.

Barber Shop Singing Workshop with Paul Wigley (USA) –Singers from all over North Wales attended this special workshop with the Barber Shop Music Specialist from Minneapolis. It was also a fantastic opportunity for our young singers to have a taste of this unique style of singing.

Performance Skills workshop with Teleri-Sian – Following requests from tutors, a workshop focussing on performance skills was arranged. Topics discussed included communicating with the audience, dealing with nerves and working with an accompanist.

Taking part in a masterclass gives musicians the opportunity to receive tuition from a specialist tutor in front of an audience. So much can be learned from watching another person receiving tuition and CGWM aims to arrange classes focussing on various instruments during the year. Recent masterclasses include:

Masterclass with internationally renowned pianist Llyr Williams: four young pianists from CGWM received a lesson from Llyr following his recital as part of Galeri’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

Cello Masterclass with Steffan Morris: Our young cellists were inspired in the class given by Steffan following his performance at a concert for Pontio in Bangor.

Harp Masterclass with Elinor Bennett in Dolgellau and Llanbedrog. We arrange for some of our tutors to give masterclasses at various venues and events across North Wales to enable students who don’t study at CGWM to benefit from their expertise.
